This page is for you! I’m going to go over our top 10 most popular oils, what they are good for, and how to use them! Before we get started on individual oils and blends, let’s learn some basics.

What exactly ARE essential oils?

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, flowers, bark, rind and leaves of plants, extracted and distilled for health benefits! They are extremely potent – 50-70 times more powerful than herbs. In fact, ONE drop of certified pure peppermint essential oil is the equivalent of 28 cups of peppermint tea! Because they are so concentrated and powerful, you can imagine that…

Quality Matters!

Always choose essential oils that are certified pure by 3rd party testers, sourced from their natural habitat around the world (this ensures the proper chemical constituents and structure so that they essential oils actually do what they are supposed to!), and that are verified pure, free of fillers, pesticides, and foreign contaminants. There are many companies who do their own testing and have claims on their bottles that they are 100% pure, but then have warnings on the bottle to not even apply topically. This should be a big red flag. The oils I use are safe, and pure enough to be taken internally (they even have FDA compliant nutrition facts on the label!).

I’d love to save you the time, money, and possible toxicity, of purchasing essential oils that claim to be something they are not. The oils I bought before I knew any better actually ended up in the TRASH, because they didn’t work and I couldn’t trust that what they label said was true. There is no regulation on the essential oil industry. Just please be a wise consumer!

Essential Oils for Beginners

 
Frankincense ▼

Frankincense is often called The King of all oils or liquid gold because it has been so highly valued for thousands of years.
Frankincense effects many, many systems of the body and also has a profound beneficial effect on the brain. It’s soothing and beautifying properties are used to rejuvenate skin and reduce the appearance of blesmishes. As the king of oils, Frankincense is known to promote cellular health and immunity and can be consumed daily for these internal benefits. It also promotes a healthy inflammatory response and acts as an overall tonic to the body’s systems, helping them function optimally.
It is now known that essential oils such as Frankincense and Sandalwood contain compounds called sesquiterpenes which are able to cross the blood brain barrier. Frankincense is a good preventative for overall health. Often it has been said, “When in doubt, Use Frankincense”

Uses:

  • Take one to two drops in a Veggie capsule to support healthy cellular function.*
  • Add to moisturizer to reduce the appearance of blemishes and to rejuvenate the skin.
  • When traveling somewhere dry, apply Frankincense to maintain healthy looking fingernails.
  • Apply to the bottom of your feet to promote feelings of relaxation and to balance mood.

 


Lavender ▼
This is often called the “Swiss army knife of essential oils”. It’s a calming and relaxing oil and is one of the oils that can be used for more restful sleep. It is also great for soothing any kind of skin irritation. We use lavender on cuts and scrapes and even on insect bite bites and stings! (My kids are big fans of using lavender to soothe their itchy mosquito bites).

Uses:

  • Widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities.
  • Soothes occasional skin irritations.
  • Reduces appearance of skin imperfections.
  • Helps to ease feelings of tension.*
  • Add a few drops of Lavender to pillows, bedding, or bottoms of feet for a restful night’s sleep.
  • Freshen your linen closet, mattress, car, or the air with a light mist of Lavender combined with water in a spray bottle.
  • Add to bath water to soak away stress or apply to the temples and the back of the neck.
  • Use in cooking to soften citrus flavors and add a flavorful twist to marinades, baked goods, and desserts.
  • Take internally to reduce anxious feelings.*
  • Take internally for a peaceful sleep.*

 


Lemon ▼
Lemon is great oil to drink in your water every day because it is a wonderful detoxification oil. (This is different than drinking lemon juice as the essential oils comes from the rind.) What an easy way to combat environmental toxins and keep your cells clean and healthy! It is also uplifting to the mood and a wonderful natural cleanser that can be used to create your own natural, inexpensive, cleaning products.

Uses:

  • Cleanses and purifies the air and surfaces.
  • Naturally cleanses the body and aids in digestion.*
  • Supports healthy respiratory function.*
  • Diffuse to promote a positive mood.
  • Take internally to assist with seasonal respiratory discomfort.*
  • Add Lemon oil to a spray bottle of water to clean tables, countertops, and other surfaces.
  • Lemon oil makes a great furniture polish; simply add a few drops to olive oil to clean, protect, and shine wood finishes.
  • Use a cloth soaked in Lemon oil to preserve and protect your leather furniture and other leather surfaces or garments.
  • Lemon oil is a great remedy for the early stages of tarnish on silver and other metals.
  • Put on rag to help remove stubborn, sticky residue off surfaces.
  • Wash hands with Lemon oil to remove grease after changing your oil.

 


Melaleuca ▼
Commonly referred to as Tea Tree oil, used for everything from clearing up problematic skin, to athlete’s foot, to disinfecting wounds. Melaleuca is one I never want to be without! When my children get a scrape or cut, I always use Melaleuca before applying Lavender. It also works wonders for ear irriation!

Uses:

  • Renowned for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin.
  • Promotes healthy immune function.*
  • Protects against environmental and seasonal threats.*
  • For occasional skin irritations, apply one to two drops of Melaleuca essential oil onto affected area.
  • Add one to two drops to water, citrus drinks, or veggie caps to support healthy immune system function.*
  • Combine one to two drops with your facial cleanser or moisturizer for added cleansing properties.
  • Apply to skin after shaving.
  • Apply to fingernails and toenails after showering to purify and keep nails looking healthy
  • Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water and use on surfaces to protect against environmental threats.
  • Create your own aftershave with Melalueca and Cedarwood.
  • Apply to the bottom of feet and inside shoes for a refresher.

 

 


Oregano ▼
One of the most powerful oils, Oregano has been used for centuries for its cleansing and immune-boosting properties. The primary chemical components of Oregano are carvacol and thymol, both in the phenols group, which possess purifying and antioxidant properties. Due to its high phenol content, caution should be taken when inhaling or diffusing Oregano; only one to two drops is needed. Also, please dilute this very hot oils when applying topically, and take extra care when using on children and sensitive skin.

One drop taken daily can help maintain healthy immune function; Oregano should be taken more frequently when seasonal threats are high or as needed to further boost immunity. When diffused, Oregano acts as an enhancer and equalizer in essential oil blends and can help maintain healthy respiratory function.

  • Put two to three drops in veggie capsule to help maintain a healthy immune system.
  • Add 10 drops to a spray bottle full of water for a last-minute counter spray.
  • Oregano is an excellent source of antioxidants.*
  • Add one drop in place of one tablespoon ground oregano to your favorite Italian dishes.

Peppermint ▼
If you happen to have some certified pure Peppermint oil with you, take a minute to apply a drop onto your hands and massage it into the back of your neck. (If you don’t have any with you- that’s OK. Just continue to read on).

Take that drop of oil, rub your hands together and massage the oil into the back of your neck. (Be sure to avoid the eye area.) Peppermint is a fantastic oil to use for muscle support and to ease tension.
Try breathing in the vapors from your hand to experience the rejuvenating, awakening qualities of the peppermint plant. I actually use Peppermint oil too stay awake and alert when I’m driving. You are probably noticing the intensity of the oil and the powerful aroma. This peppermint oil is the most concentrated and pure peppermint oil in the world. It is a very powerful oil that can be used to calm occasional stomach upset, support over-all digestive health, and to maintain a comfortable body temperature.

Uses:

  • Rub on temples after you wake up for a morning energy boost.
  • Diffuse when feeling fatigued or low on energy.
  • Take one to two drops in a Veggie Capsule to alleviate occasional stomach upset.*
  • Promotes digestive health.*
  • Place one drop in your mouth to help freshen breath.
  • Add two to three drops to your favorite smoothie recipe for a refreshing twist.
  • Place one drop in palm of hand with one drop Wild Orange and one drop Frankincense and inhale for a mid-day pick-me-up.
  • Helps reduce bloating, gas, and occasional indigestion.*
  • Promotes healthy respiratory function and clear breathing.*
  • Commonly found in oral health products.
  • Blends well with Lavender for a soothing massage blend.
  • Add to cold water compress or foot bath to cool off when overheated.
  • Inhale for a non-stimulant, invigorating pick-meup on long drives.
  • Add to shampoo or conditioner for a stimulating hair massage.

Breathe ▼
This respiratory blend contains laurel leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus, ravensara, melaleuca and lemon. This is very self-explanatory. The oils in this blend are fantastic for respiratory support in general. You can diffuse it or apply it to the chest or feet to relieve occasional respiratory issues. To do this, you should mix it with the fractionated coconut carrier oil so that you can spread it across the chest.

  • Maintains feelings of clear airways and easy breathing.
  • Helps minimize the effects of seasonal threats.
  • Diffuse or inhale directly from palms, or rub on chest when environmental threats are high.
  • Use when outdoors to minimize the effects of seasonal changes.

DigestZen ▼
Another one I never want to be without! We use this one for anything “hole to hole”. Ha! I find it most useful to take internally in an empty gel cap, or buy them in capsule form already. Another favorite way to use this oil is to rub a little directly on the area. My children love this one any time they have stomach discomfort.

  • Before a road trip, apply one to two drops for a calming aroma.
  • Have Digestive blend on hand when enjoying heavy holiday meals to promote digestion.*
  • When traveling or trying new foods take Digestive blend to soothe occasional stomach discomfort.*
  • Add to water or tea to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract.*

On Guard contains wild orange, clove bud, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, and rosemary. I use this blend daily for immune system support and protections against health threats that I am exposed to.
